Default New player, not enjoying GW

I bought GW today from gamestop to give it a try, I seem to just be walking around and killing stuff, there are no "new" quests or whatever, it's really boring.

I also made a PVP only character and that wasn't very fun either.

Am I doing something wrong? What's the fun part?

Well my friend - you are missing something, because there are lots of quests to do... in fact that is the best way to gain experience and to level your character up. Look for \people with green thingies over their heads for starters.

Also, try the guildwiki for tips on starting out.

You are probably not seeing the NPC's that give quests. Most posts/towns will have somebody with the green exclamation mark, talk to them. Check your Quest Log - L -.

You can also get some information on the wikis, as the user above told you:

Unofficial Wiki
Official Wiki

It's a great game, hopefully you will enjoy it.

Good Luck!

Starting out in PvP isn't a good idea for anyone new to the game, even if you were to buy all of the unlock packs.

Stick with PvE, and I'm sure there are things that you've missed. GW is still a great game for new players.

Which campaign did you buy? There are three - Guild Wars (called Prophecies now), Factions and Nightfall.

If you have started a character in the first campaign, then you are in pre-searing. Beautiful, but somewhat boring for many players. This is not the whole game, just the tutorial. But do as many quests as possible prior to leaving so that you level up. Foes get much harder to kill as you move along into the main part of the game.

Also, don't try to "rush" the game. You have plenty of time to try it out. I wouldn't judge it right off the bat. It's not really fair. There is no monthly fee so you can take as much time as you need.

Always pay attention when you complete a quest cause there is usualy a reference that will lead you to the next.

Also, as mentioned above, look at wiki whenever you get 'stuck'
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page . After getting to the main page type quests to see quests or missions to see what missions are available to you

On the main page a search for quests gets you to this page:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page . All quests for each campaign can be selected there.

There are lots and lots of quests/missions and the game gets better and better as you get into the story and gain skill as a player.

Have fun

Ant

Another problem might be that your playing alone, this game was built for team play.

Find a quest then ask for somebody else that is also on that same quest to join you. That will improve the fun aspect a great deal as you can learn about teamwork and how if functions in GW. The farther you go the larger your part size will become till you hit a max of 8 for most of PvE. Two elite zones take 12 and then PvP has many different sizes.

Lastly you should look for an active guild, that is a very good way to get real help when you need it and to learn from those that know what not to do.

Honestly there is nothing more to GW than killing stuff. There is no crafting, fishing, traveling, inventing, exploring, etc. All of the quests are variations of the killing theme. Kill stuff here, kill different stuff there. Go here, but that requires you to kill stuff to get there. You can't walk anywhere without killing stuff to get there (or running from stuff trying to kill you).

There are very few puzzles to solve (there are a few), mostly it's just kill stuff. That's about it. Primarily why I stopped playing, it got boring. No I didn't do everything there is to do, but I finally realized that it's all the same anyway. Kill stuff.

Wow, YOU seriously haven't played GW the way you have to do it. Let me think, you have done all the campaigns with heroes and henchies in Hard Mode? Vanquished all area's without a guild team? Never done things like HA or GvG ? Never have been in a core team to do UW SC or other elite area's?

Because i think you've really, really missed the teamwork aspect of Guild Wars. This especially comes out in PvP like Team Arena's, Heroes' Ascent and GvG. Where you will most of the times lose all battles because lack of teamwork. But it's not only PvP. When doing elite area's with a guild without any form of communication you're team probably wont be that efficient because everyone is going his own way. The team should act as one, not as 8 individuals.

Oh, and by the way, there ??s actually an explorer title.

Dae

P.S You've actually played too much runescape too i guess; Fishing, crafting

Even if Ralgha didn't experience the teamwork aspect, he wouldn't be happy (or as happy as we are). This is not the game for him, and he is not wrong for that. When you do PvP or Guild PvE, you're only killing things and trying not to get killed; working as a team, but the objective is the same.

I first got the game almost 3 years ago. I kept making new characters, and played war/necro/monk/ranger to lvl 10 or so.

Prophesies blows hardcore, tho - and I was unable to figure out the (cities w/) mission deal. so I got stuck, and ended up leveling characters to 15 against lvl 10 mobs, and not able to move on, all the while re-exploring the same nub areas...

Obviously now I know the fault - but if you're new, do nightfall or factions. Far superior, and more logical. Harder to get stumped like you clearly can in 'oldskul' GW.

GW is not an mmorpg. it is not an alternative to your real life, so it obviously won't have useless things like finishing/crafting/mining/farming/marriage/havingkids/gotothecrapper/etc, all of which are designed to waste your time and make you pay more monthly fees. fortunately, GW doesn't have that either.

GW is an action game. if you don't like action games, then don't play it.

GW is a real time sword&magic combat simulator with a skill system that closely resembles the MtG card game. The fun is supposed to be derived from unlocking new skills for your 'deck', and on the next stage learning to use those skills. Unlike with a typical MMORPG, most of the actual improvement will happen between the chair and the keyboard. Some like it, some don't.

Personally, I don't understand the allure in paying a monthly fee for the privilege of wasting hours on end in watching a bunch of pixels trying to catch virtual fish. Hence GW.

Moriz & Dae imo summed it up perfectly

Guild wars is not forcing you to do anything other than play the game games such as wow (just using it as a example dnt take offence) want to keep you hooked with as Moriz said useless things such as crafting etc etc it???s the same with runescape tons of pointless sizzle to keep you playing and paying the fees like a good little boy. Guild wars is all about teamplay if you go off and do kill this kill that move over there etc then you are not playing the game ???right??? and I suggest you uninstall now Find yourself a good guild meet new ppl find out that you like them and then you will find that GW gives you scenarios in which you can play with these people and make your way through the game.

I wish you luck but it seems to me like you wont enjoy this game jumping into the world of guru when you just bought the game normally spells Epic fail imo.
Just go back to/go to runescape and mine/fish/craft/kill/have a house or whatever those peeps do now.

@tmakinen

Likewise for me wow was fun when i was on my free trial but games are never worth paying by monthly imo.

You didn't put them in the GW2 suggestions bit did you? Then again if you did the grannies would swarm to GW2 and we'd have a ton of new players...

Killing stuff? Well that is in all the games listed so that isn't a down side its merely a fact. Saying there is only killing though as a reason is just plain silly. I personally hate complex crafting in games, and fishing which is at the whim of the deveopers codes of "chance." Though if that is what you like then great but that is not GW. i'm sorry you are not having fun in GW it is a great game. Aside from the trollers. Get-out of Pre-searing and Prophecies gets better.

I suppose you could say all you do is kill stuff........ GW is pretty much based upon killing snizzle its true in games like runescape you never have to kill anything just mine mine mine etc etc. True there is no mining / forging /knitting/other things that should be left for RL in GW Its purely fantsy.

However GW is a team game and you can hardly host annual knit offs. Winning pvp battles in GW is just a wonderful feeling and the same goes for pve you are given a challenge and you overcome it.

At the end of the day you are meant to be "A young hero of Tyria" and young heroes do not knit/mine/forge they face challenges and overcome it.
For example Dungeons in Eotn require a little bit of planning before you head off you have to plan the team build and then overcome the obstacles within the dungeon using the build and your own skill.

All in all GW is a very retro game You team up with firends and go out and kill things with your own skill at playing.

Imo its very fun... perhaps its not your cup of tea... so wasted ??15 then
